The most common species of wasps in Ireland are Common, German. There are few animals in Ireland that provoke as much negative sentiment as the common wasp. However, wasps are really a nuisance between late August and the end of September.
Wasps have a yellow and black head and a patterned abdomen. Wasps are social insects that live in colonies of thousands which are established in Spring. The wasps feed on insect larvae and other animal pieces. Their nests can be found suspended from trees, nest boxes, bee hives, rafters and dormer windows. Nests are made from paper made by mixing wood and saliva.
